Palestinian Film Festival On Now

Foreign occupation and oppression are invariably fertile breeding grounds for art, so you can bet that any film out of Palestine is going to have its fair share of poignancy and gallows humour. Lucky, then, for cinephiles that right now the Palestinian Film Festival is being held at the Palace on Norton St and Sidetrack Shed Theatre in Marrickville, showcasing the finest Palestinian films of the past few years. Highlights include Slingshot Hip Hop, which documents young Palestinians using hip hop as “a tool to surmount division imposed by occupation and poverty”. If it’s anything like Heavy Metal in Baghdad we’re in for a treat. Another stand-out is Reel Bad Arabs, looking at the portrayal of Arabs in Hollywood throughout history.
