DJ Hell's Classic Car Trouble

DJ Hell chatted to Mixmag this week about his ongoing obsession with his '60s Ford Mustang sports car and revealed that when he first bought the classic car 10 years ago he was so excited he couldn't sleep the night before delivery.

'I'm always fascinated by the power and sound of the engine and that's why I always wanted to have one- you can't buy a more masculine car,' the Gigolo Records chief explained, 'Life would be boring without my Mustang. I feel relaxed and the girls all watch when I cruise down the street,' he added.

Hell's unashamed enthusiasm was only slightly tempered by his admission that he wished it had air conditioning and power steering, striking an unfortunate chord with an article published in Fortune Magazine in 2004 headlined 'the Ultimate Midlife Crisis Car Guide'.

'One thing that doesn't seem to change is what happens when you hit your middle years: You experience an overwhelming urge to possess a hopelessly impractical automobile,' said Fortune.

'There are several must-have qualities in the perfect midlife-crisis car. First and most obvious, the vehicle must score high in the looks department. Second, it must, when you fire up the engine, inspire a spike in your pulse rate that would worry your cardiologist. Third, it should immediately gain you rock-star parking wherever you go. Fourth, it should provoke, well, steamy NC-17-and-beyond sorts of feelings,' they added.

Hell contemporary Dave Clarke was also once synonymous with fast cars though chatting to Skrufff two years ago, revealed he'd re-assessed his priorities after relocating from Brighton to Holland.

'Funnily enough, spending time in Amsterdam makes you see the car as a part time thing, it's not important,' said Dave, 'I could have any car I wanted now, but I'm not bothered, I'm really not. I just care that it is comfortable and has a great sound system, so I'll be sticking to my old Merc (Mercedes) for a long time to come,' he said.

DJ Hell's new classic italo-disco compilation Ellboy is out now on International Deejay Gigolo Records.
