Representatives for MC Hammer insisted the '90s hip hop superstar is alive this week after rumours of his death swept the internet, following the demise of his namesake, Stanley Burrell.

The baggy-trousered rapper sold millions in the early '90s, notably of breakthrough single 'U Can't Touch This' before going bankrupt and becoming a Christian minister in the mid-'90s. Fiercely criticised for his pop success, he was, however, championed by Ice Cube who, on his 1991 album OG: Original Gangster declared 'A special shout out to my man MC Hammer/A lot of people diss you, man, but they just jealous. Fuck 'em!'

Chatting to Jonty Skrufff in 1995 (as he prepared to release his own gangsta rap style album, The Funky Headhunter, he returned the compliment, declaring 'Ice Cube, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Chuck D, KRS-One, Guru, Digital Underground...we're all from the same environment.'

'All of us are from the inner city, we're products of this community that's under-educated, under-employed and lacking enough recreational opportunities to really relate to society in the way that's required. We can understand it, without being a definite part of it," said Hammer, 'I am a product of the ghetto, that's what I am.'

He also revealed a philosophical attitude to life, declaring 'no-body said it would be easy.'

'Whenever you're successful, there's always going to be a certain amount of criticism. There's a lot of untruths told about you and you just have to deal with it,' he added.

Here's a clip to remind you of the gangsta.
