Gotan Project, a French trio who combine classical tango (Gotan is a twist on the word 'tango') and nightclub beats with dub, hip hop and jazz influences, tour Australia for the first time this March.

In keeping with their reputation, Gotan Project are pulling no punches, touring with a full ten-piece band.

Gotan Project's members Philippe Cohen Solal, Christoph Mueller and Eduardo Makaroff met in the late 1990's through a mutual passion for the combination of sound with image, electronic and acoustic music.

Five years ago Gotan Project broke new ground in tango and electronica with their debut album 'La Revancha Del Tango' (which has sold in excess of a million copies worldwide), and have played shows everywhere from Tel Aviv to Tokyo and in between.

For their second studio album, Philippe explained that they 'really wanted to explore both tango and folkloric music from Argentina a lot further than we had before. That's why many of the tracks are really classically tango-orientated, very traditional patterns that people like (Anibal) Troilo would use'.

'Lunático' was recorded in Buenos Aires with local session musicians; a complete string section, two emcees, one trombonist and Argentine piano legend and long-time Gotan collaborator, Gustavo Beytelmann, conducting much of the musical goings on. The album also features a collaboration with Calexico and a cover of Ry Cooder's Paris, Texas.
