Skinner cuts of cocaine

Streets star Mike Skinner chatted about his drug use to the Observer magazine this week and revealed that his heavy cocaine habit at the time of his breakthrough hit Dry Your Eyes in 2004 prevented him from enjoying his massive commercial success.

“By the end of that summer I was in my South London flat thinking I’d commit suicide,” he revealed. “I wasn’t able to feel how good things were because I was so physically destroyed by cocaine. If you haven’t done it, don’t,” the 27 year old star advised.

His attitude differed markedly from interviews in 2003 when he cheerfully told Q magazine “In answer to your question, I have done smack (heroin) and crack, but it’s not something that’s very good; well, crack’s good,” he quipped.

Speaking to 7 magazine in the same year, he was similarly light-hearted about drugs, declaring, “Charlie (cocaine) makes you a prat, weed (marijuana) makes you para (paranoid), speed is only good for lorry drivers and models and smack makes you hang around tube stations. And crack makes you think it’s acceptable to rob people,” he added.
