Clubbers taking anabolic steroids to develop six packs and muscle Mary style bodybuilder physiques are at risk of developing permanent brain damage, US researchers claimed this week.

The new study, published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, said users could experience a ‘catastrophic loss of brain cells’ causing them to exhibit symptoms consistent with Alzheimer Disease as well as the roid rage, often associated with the drugs.

“Next time a muscle-bound guy in a sports car cuts you up, don’t get mad,” study author Professor Barbara Erlich advised. “Just take a deep breath and realise that it might not be his fault.” (Metro)

The study emerged just weeks after a new British survey estimated that 1.6 million young men, including lots of clubbers and teenagers are now using the drugs, many purely for cosmetic reasons.

"Drug projects are seeing increasing numbers of young men who just want to look good," Druglink study author Max Daly told the Guardian.

"Many seem to take steroids in the run-up to summer, so they can show their bodies off in the street and in the park. The desire for a six-pack comes with the aspiration for better clothes and smoother skin,” he said.

Steroids played a prominent role in the story of notoriously violent US club promoter Chris Paciello, who went from being a New York freelance mafia thug for hire to running Miami’s hottest nightspot of the ‘90s, Liquid, according to seminal US club book Clubland Confidential. Liquid security chief Gilbert Stafford (one of America’s iconic club characters) attributed Paciello’s hairline temper directly to steroids, which saw him frequently battering rivals, employees and DJs, including Keoki, after the ex Club-kid star reportedly fell asleep once while DJing at the Miami club.

“He stormed over to Keoki, yanked him out of the booth and took him into the back alley, where he slapped him around while screaming, ‘Get the hell out of here, you fucking junkie and never come back again’,” Clubland Confidential author Frank Owen recounted.
