Cross dressing robot LED fanatic My Robot Friend chatted to Skrufff this week about his life before the electroclash scene he first emerged from and revealed that he lived a monkish life almost entirely devoted to studying.

“I was an A grade student in my school days, I actually never got a B in my entire academic career,” he confessed. “I really was a super nerd.”

“I didn’t really have much of a social life, I was very focused on working, that was my personality and I’m still that way to be honest,” he continued.

“It’s partially linked to a certain shyness. I enjoy working a lot and I have some social awkwardness. Even doing My Robot Friend provides me with a means of going out and being social because I have a purpose and I’m working, which feels a lot easier,” he explained.

The Soma signed artist left school to study neuroscience at university, discovering music when he moved to New York in the mid 90s, when My Robot Friend was born.

“My relationship to the robot is totally a superhero type one. I have this costume which I put on and suddenly gain these social powers that I don’t normally have,” he chuckled.

“Part of constructing the costume was that I wasn’t able to perform the stage stuff without it and express myself. I have a light in my face that protects me from my audience and I’m able to be in my own world. People never recognise me after the shows either. I can do a show and walk out through the crowd and no one says anything to me.”
