Honkytonks : Laneway to oblivion!

Laneway clubbing has taken on new proportions since Honkytonks opened it's doors. But as 2006 draws to a close so does the Honky's era. Here are your remaining chances to celebrate in front of the baby grand...

If you're a Melbourne native and you've ever had a taste for funk, soul, jazz, latin or disco, chances are you visited the club night Cocoa Butter at some stage in your funky life. Cocoa Butter ran for nearly 9 years and formed one of Melbourne's most original and solid weekend club experiences. It was the first club night to introduce jazz, funk, soul, latin, boogie and brasilian grooves to a dancefloor, showcasing the record collections of some of Australia's first crate-diggers and collectors. The 'Soul Train' parties with their crazy dance competitions are still talked about. Cocoa Butter also introduced live musicians into the mix, playing alongside DJs you would often hear flute, sax keys or percussion, the musicians giving an extra injection into the already furious dancefloor movements. Cocoa Butter was a place to truly get down! It was aptly called 'aseriousgetdownsession!' Hearing soulful sounds mixed with serious jazz mixed with latin grooves mixed with real funk and anything else that felt good at the time and being able to lose it on the floor was what made Cocoa Butter so loved. So many soles were worn out - we kept Melbourne's shoe repair stores working overtime after each weekend!

The third re-union of the high order of Cocoa Butter disciples is underway. Damn! They're back again to get all Hot, Funky and Sweaty! - to give you a taste of how we did things back in the days when funk was a dirty word, soul meant that you felt it deep inside and jazz was a good dancer's only true friend!
Thursday 21st December with The Bamboos - 9 piece Funk Orchestra! and DJs Kano, Ennio Styles and Chris Gill.

On Friday Honk's serve up Boogs vs Spacey Space (4 decks, 2 mixers and 6 hours). In a recent interview Spacey says and we quote: "I like Boogs because he is tall so I don't have to stoop to talk to him in a club. Being a tall DJ is hard because the decks are usually too low so you get a sore back. But despite this there some bloody tall bastards out there." This weekend we put these two tall bastards behind 4 decks and some CDJs. Come and get loose to their combined sound of electro-funk-house-techno vibe.
