Ghetto Fabulous Dress Up for 007

We really wanted to get the low down on this rumours we'd heard about a 007 party... our bet for New Year's Day, so we hunted down the aural terrorist Bass Bin Laden and asked him the basics about 007

Who are youse guys-

Ghetto Fabulous is the bastard child of DJ/promoters Bass Bin Laden and the evergreen Ms. Butt. It all kicked off as a reactionary pisstake to the commercial r'n'b scene but it went so well that it evolved into a more serious hip hop and reggae affair. We never thought it would get past the first party. The dress up themes and crazy stuff like fake casinos took over from the pisstake side of things, nearly four years later. I reckon club nights are similar to dog's lives in duration, you know 7 to 1 on human years which makes ghetto about 28 now. So we are not quite into our mid life crisis but I must admit the desire to buy a Porsche is there…

Tell us about some of your favourite parties-

The ones which spring to mind, through the haze that is my memory of Ghetto Fabulous have gotta be, Bass Bin Laden's Booty School at The Croft Institute and the casino speakeasy at Platform One. Booty School for the moment when, the Licensing Police were coming down Croft Lane to attend to about a hundred noise complaints and were met with the sight of hundreds of nutters in skimpy school uniforms (packed down the length of the laneway because the club was so full), and our mates Joel and Mars in PE teacher attire, swigging from a bottle of scotch and giving instructions for a pash off contest behind the shelter sheds…And the speakeasy stands out, for all our gang in incredible costumes standing around a roulette wheel spun by Arty the midget, not long after that there was a mutiny in the casino and Arty spent the rest of the night grinding with Bec who's like six foot tall on the dance floor. Talking of Mutinies, the Quest for Pirate Booty party stand out for the best costumes ever, there's pics of all this stuff on our site, see for yourself.

What are you listening to at the moment-

Dubstep is rocking my world. I saw this DJ called Skream play who was out for the Red Bull Academy, and it was like old school jungle days, same energy, crazy kids jumping on the decks calling for rewinds. For those who don't know, dubstep is the new sound of the London underground, a crazy mash up of dub, hard edge hip hop and tecno style sounds and production. Its pretty gnarly and I'm working on a set mixing it with dancehall and jungle to make it a bit more dancehall friendly, but fun and fresh. There was some really cool stuff coming out of the southern USA as well, stripped back, slow ,post crunk stuff, but its gone and generified itself as "snap" and its all got a bit generic and same-ish. Bits of Reggaeton, lots of reggae, they just keep putting out killer records from that little island, minimal german techno when I'm a bit sideways…

What about this New Years Day party then-

We have done big off Ghetto Fabulous New Year's parties the last two years and this year we felt like something more intimate, where we could just chill out and get on it with our mates. We run a weekly night at First Floor on Brunswick St called Players Ball and with New Year's falling on a Sunday we went for that. But the bastard child felt left out so we decided to team up with our sister crew (personal favourites of mine from the techno world) Semi- Retired it's a state of mind for a NYD bash. Being 2007 the urge to throw a James Bond party proved irresistible and we found this amazing warehouse venue on High St near Northcote, known as Carni and its all on!

What's in the Ghetto Fabulous future-

Well post New Year's there's
