A Las Vegas soft drinks company, who recently launched a higher strong energy drink that’s reputedly three times as powerful as Red Bull, came under sustained fire from US politicians this week, over their decision to call their product ‘Cocaine’.

"There are only two reasons that you would seek to use this infamous and insidious name to market your so-called energy drink," Queens councilman James Sanders told the New York Times.

"Either you are woefully ignorant of the horrors of cocaine addiction, or your god is the dollar bill."

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was equally enraged, telling a press conference, “I think that the bottlers ought to have their heads examined. Given that we have drug problems among kids, to try to glorify something that is so destructive is an outrage,” he suggested. (New York Daily News)

Cocaine producers Redux Beverages, appear shamelessly unrepentant, however, boasting on their website publicity “you are about to experience the highest energy content of ANY energy drink on the market today! 350% greater than The Bull! (Red Bull) The question you have to ask yourself is: ‘Can I handle the rush-’”

The site also offers a watered down anti-drug disclaimer (“we don't advocate drug use. What you do with your drink is completely up to you!”), adding a tongue-in-cheek warning that cocaine offers “extreme amounts of energy” and that drinkers should “use at your own risk”.

“Side-effects are associated with this product,” they also declare. “This beverage should be consumed by responsible adults. Failure to adhere to this warning may result in excess excitement, stamina, fun and possible feelings of euphoria.”
