Ambient's Angriest Advocate Chills Out

Stoned Asia/ chill out king Pathaan caught up with Skrufff again this week and revealed that he's mellowed since his last Skrufff interview three years ago when he raged against being labelled a hippy by journalists.

Also complaining at the time that he was "really fucked off and sickened by the fact that chill out's become a dirty word' this time round, he insisted he'd never been that cross, declaring "I was never angry about the term hippy, just about being judgemental."

The new CD remains firmly centred around his usual highly eclectic selection of multi-national chill out tracks, deviating slightly towards the mainstream with cuts from Depeche Mode, Mylo, Dirty Vegas and Thievery Corporation. Admitting that he remains highly motivated to achieve commercial success, the always outspoken artist stressed he remains fully committed to addressing higher issues including the future of humanity and the world.

"We are predators and right now we're the most dangerous predators on planet earth, we're the only animal that kills its own kind and propagates violence for no apparent reason," he pointed out.

"Humans are causing the extinction of other species and desecrating the ecology of our planet but then simultaneously, we're the most holy and creative. We're the only species that creates music and asks the meaning of God and the only species, which is aware of awareness.

This is the paradox that comes with being human. We are simultaneously sacred and profane, so we are the full expression of spirit and that's why many people like me, I think are on this path of discovering other forms of music, living and understanding more about ourselves and other cultures," he added.

Pathaan's Universal Sunset is out now on Altura Music.
