The Sunday Times dissected a supposedly salacious sex survey published by their sister newspaper The Sun this week, and pointed out "the nation's steamiest secret' is the fact that massive numbers of Brits are in reality almost totally abstaining from sex.

"Let's look at the survey in a little more detail," the Sunday Times proposed. "For a start 18% of people say they never have sex. Not so much as a nibble. Another 21% say they have sex about once a year or less. That's nearly 40% of the population whose sex life is virtually non-existent."

The Times' article coincided with a Guardian special report about Ian Kerner's best selling (US) sex guide "She Comes First: The Thinking Man's Guide to Pleasuring a Woman' which highlighted Mr Kerner's theory that skilled cunnilingus is the key to female sexual success.

"Less than one third of American women achieve a climax on a regular basis when making love to a partner," The Guardian emphasised in their piece on the sex book. "(But) if that partner spent just 21 minutes on foreplay, 92.3% of the women were guaranteed an orgasm."
