Yoko Ono & Tom Tom Club Turn Out For Useless Magazine

New York scenesters Amanda Lapore and Kenny Kenny turned up at Crobar for the launch of "hipster yuppie scum' magazine Useless last week, partying alongside alternative icons Yoko Ono and the Tom Tom Club.

Magazine founder and publisher Conrad Ventur (who's also one of Skrufff's men-in-New York) said this week that he's been delighted with the reaction he had to the fashion/ music/ art magazine so far.

"Amanda said it was fabulous, Kenny Kenny said it was gorgeous and Yoko asked me for a stack of them to give to her friends," Conrad told Skrufff.

"But make no beans about it, I don't want anyone to take it too seriously. Some other mags just beg you to give them credibility - but ultimately, I'm highlighting very fleeting moments that I know may or may not stand the test of time. "

The magazine launch preceded Larry Tee's annual Outsider Festival at the same club, and was produced with a similar ethos, said Conrad.

"Everyone's always complaining about how New York sucks; I wanted to find what was interesting about my world and put some light on it," he explained.

"Useless has profiles about people who are hot right now - people who are doing things. They might be nowhere tomorrow or they might break through and be totally amazing though my hope is that everybody becomes sensations. But even the best band or art idea might get bogged down and that's what fun about the whole project - how ephemeral it is. Here today - gone tomorrow - truly useless moments and things about art, music and fashion that we love."

Features include a piece on London's Golf Sale, Rio's Fashion Week and Michael Alig though Conrad said he's already looking ahead to the next issue.

"If anyone wants to send me truly useless photographs, letters, articles or ideas, e-mail them to me for now at conradventur@electroclash.com ", he said.
