Britain's Police Federation this week called on the government to reverse the recent downgrade of cannabis from class B to class C, complaining that increasing numbers of cheeky pot-smokers are teasing officers on the beat.

"The government's saying 'It (cannabis) is not really serious, we don't want you to prioritise it', but it is an arrestable offence and now we get people saying 'go on, arrest me," Federation chairperson Jan Berry complained in the Observer. The paper responded by calling for cannabis to be licensed in an editorial (ie effectively legalised).

Meanwhile in India, respected newspaper the Hindustan Times also called for decriminalisation of soft drugs, pointing out the abject failure of draconian measures to reduce use or associated crime.

"Surely, there is something lopsided about the National Drugs and Psychotropics Substances Act that can get you a ten-year jail sentence for possessing 10 grams of marijuana, a fairly mild drug that has been legalised in many countries, while a violent crime like rape will fetch you five-seven years," the Times suggested.(Hindustan Times)
