Trance Superstars Sign Up For The Rock Revolution

Psy-trance stars Infected Mushroom echoed both Sasha and Paul Van Dyk in tipping rock as dance culture's Next Big Thing this week, telling Time Out "psy-trance is extreme, but it's moving towards other kinds of music'.

"Now with more guitars and lyrics in the music, it's opening up more," said band member Amit Duvdevani. "I watch a lot of MTV, trash metal and pop and bring it into my own music," he revealed.

The Israeli star's comments came just weeks after mainstream trance type Paul Van Dyk admitted being blown away by the decidedly un-trance like new style of fellow superstar DJ Sasha.

" It wasn't anything like the sort of sound I'd seen him spin the last time I'd caught one of his sets," said Van Dyk (writing in his latest column in Mixmag). "He was kind of playing rock music but it was actually really cool."

In more rock/ dance crossover news, The Guardian reported this week that coffee table funk kings Groove Armada have also recently transformed themselves into a "full on techno-rock band', judging by the live show at the Manchester Apollo.

"Dance music's most school-teacherly group pull it off in a manner suggesting they may have secretly spent their youth playing air guitar," the newspaper declared. "Their stage instrumentation could be shared with Iron Maiden."
