The Orb Illuminates Elephant & Castle (May 14)

The Orb main man Alex Patterson will be going back to his roots in May, when he plays a late night gig at The Coronet, Elephant & Castle. During the 80s, the now partially gentrified area was packed with squatters living in the large numbers of empty flats scattered throughout Elephant's many infamous council estates (housing projects), at a time when Patterson himself was living a hand to mouth existence.

"I lived in squats from 1978 until 82, then got a flat for three years, it went wrong so I returned to squatting again," the ambient/ chill out pioneer recalled in his last interview with Skrufff.

" Squat culture is the socialist side of a society that's being eaten up by capitalism. It's about the fact that there are things out there for nothing and you should be able to take them. It's freedom of choice - if people don't fucking use the houses then just fucking move in there."

"I had that squat mentality and I still have it now, which is basically the attitude of 'fucking leave me alone'," Patterson added.
