The Face is facing an uncertain future this week, after its publishing company EMAP pulled the plug on the world renowned 80s and 90s trend-spotting style bible. "Publication of The Face has been suspended pending its radical reinvention, sale or closure," EMAP chief Paul Keenan told reporters, this week, after the magazine's circulation slipped to 25,000.

Its demise drew mixed reactions from Britain's media commentators, with rival GQ editor Dylan Jones (a former Face writer) suggesting a new editor could have saved it while Daily Telegraph hack Toby Young (apparently a failed wannabe Face writer from the 80s) was ecstatic.

"It is an anachronism ('out-of-date relic'- long word Ed), the in-house magazine of a clique whose moments has passed," he sneered.

"For better or worse, we live in a more meritocratic society and you don't need to claim to be in touch with the young, or to have inside knowledge of the music scene or to be from 'the street', in order to challenge the old elites," said Young.
