Lifestyle cultural experts trendsetters.com branded tattoos trendy this week, in their latest assessment of American cultural trends.

"Tattoo parlours say upper-middle-class women, ages 20 and 40, fuel most of the growth," Trend-setters explained, "signalling that tattoos, like the low-rise jeans that reveal them, will remain the dominant uniform of the trendy set."

Their report highlighted the fact that 30% of 18-34 year old Americans now have tattoos (compared 1% of all Americans 30 years ago), though also mentioned the fact that Oklahoma officials recently decided to continue their ban on tattoo shops, partially because of a supposed link to criminality.

"Go to your penitentiaries and your detention centers over the state and you're going to find a whole lot more tattoos than you will at the honour society at the University of Oklahoma," Senator Mike Fair, R-Oklahoma City told local newspaper the Claremore Daily Progress.

The Senator's concerns matched those of Elizabeth B Myre, who conducted a survey last year of 484 people aged between 12 and 22 in California, which discovered that the tattooed and pierced individuals were three times more likely to use drugs like cocaine and ecstasy.

"While there's nothing inherently wrong with body piercing or tattoos, they are a wake-up call to parents and physicians that there might be something else going on," Ms Myre told the Lexington Herald Leader.

"They're a marker that these kids are prone to risky behaviours."
