Sunday Times style expert Professor Gideon Carter (aka restaurant critic Giles Coren) launched a renewed tirade against body piercing this week declaring himself, 'revolted by the contemplation of them (piercings)'.

"The piercing of tongues is a practise so barbaric, so primitive, so demeaning that gentler folk are wont to call it 'medieval', he sniffed (in his latest 'Intellectual's Guide to Fashion').

"Not so. Contemplate on the beauty of Chaucer to see how much more civilised his time was than ours".

Just eight months previously, the 'Professor' branded pierced people savages, labelling them 'vulgar, semi-literate scum at the bottom of our society".
