Barcelona Baja Beach Club's recent decision to offer a microchip implant service for VIP clubbers sparked controversy this week, when civil liberties campaigners highlighted the dark side of the new technology.

"If you are happy to be surgically implanted you must be aware of the dangers," Liberty spokesman Barry Hugill told the Guardian.

"You may be served more quickly but it could also mean someone could stalk or monitor you."

Even more alarmingly, London club runner Alan Grant from Neighbourhood told the paper he expects microchip clubbing to become standard practise within 10 years, while Baja Beach boss Conrad Chase suggested the implants will be even more ubiqituous.

"The objective of this technology is to bring an ID system to a global level that will destroy the need to carry ID documents and credit cards," Mr Chase told local news agency EFE News.

"The veriChip we implant in the Baja will not only be for the Baja, but is also useful for whatever other enterprise that makes use of this technology."
