New York electro-popsters Scissor Sister were labelled 'pop's big new sensation- the name you need to drop' by the Sunday Times this week, cementing their reputation as the biggest new band of 2004.

The accolade preceded an interview with the band in which front-man Jake Shears revealed he'd taken up music as a result of being bullied in his youth.

"I was picked on at High School, you know, this is for all those kids that called me 'faggot'," said Shears.

"The greatest pop music is always an act of revenge, it's giving those kids the middle finger."

NME also gave the group The Strokes-style pop star treatment this week, dubbing them 'the most rock & roll band on the planet', though Shears spoiled his nice guy image by being mean about Justin Timberlake and Britney.

"I think she's a mental midget. I'm not afraid to say that and I don't think people will disagree with me, I don't think she's ever presented any kind of intellect," he mocked.

"I think Justin is very talented and has made some great music, (but) I think he's a wet noodle. I think he's completely personality-less."
