Last Sunday New York's Sound Factory was shut down and owner Richard Grant and two prominent club runners were arrested.

The joint operation was between the NYPD and federal agents and those arrested were charged with promoting and permitting the widespread sale of drugs and face up to 20 years in prison if convicted due to the bizarre US laws.

Since its opening in 1989, millions of discerning clubgoers in the world have passed through the doors of the legendary Sound Factory and it immediately gained an unbeatable reputation for great music and great parties, featuring the newest dance sounds by soon-to-be-world-famous djs just beginning their careers.

Originally the club was located on West 27th Street, but after seven years lost it's lease. Determined to keep the music going in 1996 the club secured a new location on West 46th Street.

The quality of this venue is unsurpassed technically, featuring an unheard of 120,000 watts of power and one of the most elaborate sound and lighting systems of any club in the world in space of over 30,000 square foot.

The Sound Factory has experienced problems with the law before in both 1999 and 2003 as the city took court action against a number of New York clubbing institutions branding them public nuisances.

The club will be closed this weekend and if and when the club is re-opening at this time is unknown.
