New York's fiercely puritanical Mayor Michael R Bloomberg dismissed claims by many New York club owners that they face an imminent 1am curfew under new nightlife licensing reforms as 'distortions' this week, telling the New York Times this guy who's pushing this is a little bit going overboard'.

However, New York Nightlife Association lawyer Robert Bookman, speaking for David Rabin, the 'guy' Bloomberg referred to, insisted the terms of the proposed 'nightlife licence' are too harsh to mean anything else.

"There is no question this is a de facto closing of bars and clubs at 1 am, because no one can withstand the provisions of this law," he suggested.

The Times also said many nightlife people no longer trust New York's administration, a point of view amply supported by New York promoter/ club writer Daniel Nardicio.

'Go out this weekend to your favourite bar or nightclub and have a fucking blast. Dance!," he wrote in his latest column for online gay magazine Blade.

"Support bar owners and then go out into the streets (not in front of the club) and yell " New York City Will Not Die!"'
