New York's latest puritanical Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed radical changes to the city's noise regulations this week, including a new clause outlawing excessive 'bass level vibrations' from nightclubs.

Under the new code, cops will also be able to issue on-the-spot tickets based on their own judgement rather than noise meters, with clubs facing $3,000 fines for second offences.

The new proposals came less than two years after the Bloomberg administration began vigorously enforcing existing noise laws against clubs, in a move the New York Times dubbed a 'crackdown against clubs' though the latest proposal drew surprisingly fierce criticism from Britain's conservative newspaper The Daily Telegraph.

"The campaign has reinforced the billionaire's image as a busybody wanting to turn America's largest city. . into a big, bland suburb," they complained.
