Rudolph Giuliani, the one time New York mayor who closed Twilo and launched a puritanical crusade against the City's clubs, is being tipped for a top Republican administration job, according to the Sunday Times and could even run for the presidency in 2008.

The notoriously puritanical mayor revitalized his career when he took charge of the chaos following 9/11 though before then was becoming increasingly unpopular after closing internationally recognised clubbing institutions including Twilo and Tunnel. His assistant, Deputy Mayor Rudy Washington, infamously boasted of their club assaults; "we've been closing these little buckets of blood for about three years and paralyzing them," reflecting the zeal that Giuliani applied to clubs.

The mayor also targeted pot smokers during his tenure, overseeing a 50 fold jump in cannabis arrests in the city, from 720 a year in 1992, to 33,471 a year. And speaking in Britain two years ago (when he was visiting the Queen to accept an honorary knighthood, he urged British authorities to do the same.

"Marijuana caused a lot of the violence we had," Sir Rudolph told the BBC.

I would encourage the police to arrest as many of them (British cannabis users) as possible."
