NME editor Connor McNicholas denied his paper's massive magic mushroom guide had been irresponsible this week, and defended 'NME's top tips for top trips' robustly.

"The fact is a minority of young people will at some stage in their lives experiment with drugs," said Connor.

"You have to talk in a way that young people will relate to- you don't want someone coming on like your mum or dad and being told not to do certain things."

The former Muzik's editor's parental concerns contrasted sharply with NME's editorial stance from the title's heyday in the 1950s, when the pop magazine condemned Cliff Richard for his 'crude exhibitionism'.

"His violent hip-swinging is revolting," NME complained, "(it's) hardly the kind of performance any parent could wish their child to witness."
