The massive expansion on shops selling legal magic mushrooms in the UK could be about to about to spark off a 'Third Summer of Love', NME declared this week in their Glastonbury special issue.

"In '67 it was LSD, Sgt Pepper and Vietnam; in '88 it was ecstasy, acid house and the Tory jackboot; and in '04 it's legally purchased 'ornamental' mushrooms, shroomadelica and having the modern day Ghengis Khan in the White House," they decreed.

"Turn on, tune in, drop out and get 'shroomed up, as the Third Summer of Love kicks off," they added (in a full page guide to taking mushrooms dubbed 'NME's top tips for top trips').

Their surprisingly explicit endorsement of the mind-altering fungi came two years after now defunct dance magazine Ministry published a similarly enthusiastic endorsement of the LSD-like psychedelics.

"Quite remarkably, it is 100% legal to grow your own magic mushrooms," said Ministry, "and we've even got a letter from the Home Office to prove it'".
