Melbourne's Nubreed - The Original

Nubreed began around 10 years ago in 1994 when the boys came together as mutual friends who met through music. Jase (Jason Catherine) and Mykel (Michael Walburgh) met through Mykel's sister at the age of 14 who introduced the two knowing they had similar musical tastes, and they hit it off. Later DB (Danny Bonnici) was in a band that was looking for an MC, he came across Mykel, who then introduced him to Jase… and the three have been inseparable since.

Fusing together over 40 years of collective experience in hip-hop, funk, R&B, soul and rock Jase, Mykel and DB have come together to create the innovative and unique sound which is Nubreed. After releasing singles, remixing more tracks than you can poke a stick at and devastating audiences around the country with their amazing live shows the group is finally releasing their debut album "The Original" in Australia through Vicious and Shock on April 26th 2004. Complete with special bonus tracks and a limited edition bonus mix CD from Australia's No 1 DJ Phil K.

Tranzfusion's Sara Brooke had a chat with Jase to talk about the new album, new tour and all things Nubreed…

Since the release of the first single "One Day" a few weeks ago radio stations all around the country such as Triple J and Nova FM have jumped on board to support the track. Soon fans will be able to see the new video clip for the track commissioned by one of Australia's leading video production companies - EXIT films. (Australians may be familiar with the new Tooheys's ad the company did which is getting a bit of attention - the 'I can't get no satisfaction' tongue that travels the streets in search of a beer.) Jase hadn't seen the video when we spoke but explained that it had been 'edited with crazy footage based on clips of scenes encapsulating every day life".

To promote the new album Nubreed will be embarking on a tour around Australia and New Zealand. Over the past few years the group has always drawn comparison to live Australian electronic act Infusion and quite frequently get asked the question of 'why don't you tour overseas like them-" Jase explains "we have always had offers to do live gigs from all around the globe but we have always felt that in order to tour overseas you need a story to tell. Infusion had had their album and their story but until we had finished our album we just weren't ready. Now that we have finished the album we have our story to tell and our package complete so taking it around the world is definitely the plan".

To complete that package the Nubreed boys have recently added drummer, percussionist, turn-tablist and programmer Dave "Jizz" Norris to their live performances. Formerly of DB Chills fame and drummer for Wicked Beat Sound System Jase explains how this came about - "we met Dave in Sydney through mutual friends and had seen his work with DB Chills and were really impressed. When we met him it felt like we were meeting someone we had known for 10 years or so, an instant soul mate! We were looking at expanding our live shows so when DB Chills broke up we suggested Dave to move down to Melbourne and play with us." The arrangement has worked extremely well and while at the moment Dave is just supporting the boys by playing drums during their live gigs, he has also been at the studio everyday with the boys practicing and contributing to new studio work. "After working on the album for months we were quite drained, getting Dave into the studio has brought in a whole new spark and dynamic. He has gotten us excited about making new music again… who knows by the next album if he earns his stripes he could very well become the forth official member of Nubreed."

For those tranzfusion readers that haven't had the opportunity to see a live Nubreed show, you have been missing out. A cross between a live electronic act and a live band the group have played their energetic shows all around the country at such gigs as the Boiler Ro
