Soft Cell superstar Marc Almond was fighting for his life this week, after being critically injured in a horrific motorbike accident in the City Of London.

The 48 year old alternative icon and electro pioneer suffered serious head injuries after the bike he was being driven on reportedly collided with a car at the New Change junction on Cannon Street on Sunday afternoon. According to eye-witnesses he was flung into the City of London road and left lying on the ground unconscious.

"There was blood everywhere," one witness told the Mirror. "The passenger (Marc Almond) looked like he had done a lot of damage to his head. The bike rider looked quite badly injured too."

The singer was taken to The Royal London Hospital where his condition improved to "stable' by Monday, prompting an upbeat message of support from his one time collaborator Gene Pitney.

"I just want you to get out of there and get back to what you do great," the 60s crooner said in a statement issued to Independent Radio News.

"You are a tremendous talent. And stay off motorcycles," he added.

The accident came less than a year after Marc took up DJing, telling Skrufff at the time that he'd been inspired by electroclash which itself drew heavily on the post-punk scene he'd dominated in the early 80s.

"I really like the electroclash scene particularly the smaller clubs that are full of interesting people, doing little performances and that kind of thing- there's much more of an intimate, creative atmosphere," said Marc.

"Recently so many interesting things are happening and I've also started listening to my record collection again," he added. "DJing has made me fall back in love again with lots of music as well as rediscovering new sounds."
