Graeme Park's Retro Revelation: 80s Electro Beats Lethargic House

Manchester house legend Graeme Park chatted to Skrufff this week about his current retro-themed tour of Revolution club/bars and revealed that he's getting a much better crowd reaction from early 80s electro than from the original acid house music with which he made his name.

"The stuff that hasn't dated well, even if it still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, is a lot of the early house stuff, which sounds really lethargic and quite slow," said Graeme.

"Interestingly, the younger crowd have got absolutely no time for the early house stuff; they don't want it, they don't know it; they don't care about it. Though when you dig out early nineties music, say from "92 onwards, then everyone loves those records. It is quite weird," he said.

The one time Hacienda star revealed he plans to be playing a hugely varied selection of tunes at his upcoming New Year gig at the Tribal Gathering rave in Manchester including his 1989 remix of Imagination'a Just An Illusion and more than a few more old favourites.

"When you'd DJ at the Hacienda you could drop Ghost Town by The Specials and people go mental, whereas jif I dropped Ghost Town by The Specials in Loughborough on a Saturday night people would more likely go "What the fuck is he doing-' he said.

"Unless I'm doing six hours or something, so that's why we want to do this Tribal Gathering party in Manchester."

"I think it's going to be a massive event, Mike Pickering and I are doing 8 hours. That's going to be from 8pm to 4am on New Years Day," he said.
