Fesh First Birthday: It's Nice Having Trendy People But . . .

Colin Toogood, the promoter behind Hoxton's thriving electro-techno-clash-mash weekly Fesh chatted to Skrufff this week to mark his club's first birthday at 333 and said he's delighted with their progress so far.

""Everybody's been quick to say that dance music's over but to us it still feels like we're involved in an exciting, emerging new scene," said Colin.

"I think it's interesting that lots of the most fashionable people seem to be getting into clubbing again so perhaps those who are saying it's all over are already well behind."

While Colin admitted that Fesh was partially named by combining the words fashion and fetish ('it also evolved from Fish' he added) the club's main emphasis remains its music, he insisted.

"We play quite trendy music so we do attract a certain trendy element and on one level it's nice having those dressed up people around but I don't like that to become an important factor above the music," he continued.

"There are certain clubs where dressing up has become more important but we still see Fesh as a club for people that really like the music; we do get some of the Nag regulars down but you have to remember that 333 is a much bigger club than Ghetto. If Nag is packed with 300 people in, even if we had a hundred of those people you wouldn't necessarily think it was very Naggish at ours, because they'd be mixed in with hundreds of others."

"But having said that, I still think Nag is a great night," he added.

"Sure there are people that turn their noses up at it now saying 'it's not what it was; whatever. I think 'bollocks', the last time I went to Nag it was the best night I'd ever had there. And with Fesh, I can happily say the same, last week's night when Alexander Robotnick rocked.
