ABC News dubbed the rise in ecstasy use in America a once in fifty year phenomenon this week and claimed its explosive growth has been caused by 'overwhelming positive word-of-mouth' communication'.

The respected US TV network based their report on the views of several experts including Robert MacCoun, a drug policy analyst at the University of California, who suggested many users display 'an evangelical fervour' about the Class A drug.

"I have never heard anybody say to me methamphetamine improved my life. I know people who like to use cocaine, but I have never heard anybody try to claim that cocaine is good for me," said Mr MacCoum.

"But with MDMA, lots of people think that the drug has improved their life."

ABC also questioned US Government attempts to link ecstasy with brain damage ('whether this is true remains very controversial', they said) and predicted that the drug will remain 'the drug of choice for a generation'.
