Decibel Dangers Include Collapsed Lungs

UK scientists warned this week that clubbers standing too close to loud speakers are at risk of experiencing collapsed lungs which in some cases could prove fatal.

Dr John Harvey, of Southmead Hospital in Bristol, issued the alert after collating data from a number of cases across Europe including one 25 year man who experienced a sudden severe pain in his chest after standing too close to speakers in a club. Dr Harvey suggested that the number of similar cases coming to light is 'significant', with men three times more likely than women to be affected.

"I don't think we'll stop people going to clubs, but we may be able to advise them not to stand next to loud speakers or put a bass box into their car," the Doctor told the BBC.

The story emerged just weeks after a US firm unveiled details of a new 'non-lethal acoustic weapon' they've developed, which fires 145 decibel 'sonic bullets' to incapacitate targets.

"[For] most people, even if they plug their ears, it will produce the equivalent of an instant migraine," Woody Norris, CEO of American Technology Corporation boasted to ABC News. "Some people, it will knock them on their knees."
