Basement Jaxx' attempts to re-invent themselves as rockers appear to be failing, judging by comments from MTV chief Sally Habbershaw, who singled them out in a wider tirade against dance music, this week.

"The interest in dance music has shifted across to rock music," the VH1 general manager told the Independent.

"Go to a Basement Jaxx concert and most of the people are 25-plus. The young kids aren't interested in it."

Her comments came despite concerted attempts by the Brixton duo to distance themselves from club culture, in press interviews for their new album Kish Kash.

"What's annoying is that we're always told we're an electronic dance band, that doesn't happen with Radiohead or Coldplay," Felix Buxton complained to NME in October.

"They're artists and musicians, they don't have to explain."

Chicago house contemporary DJ Sneak seemed annoyed with his former proteges himself last week, telling Sydney's 3D World 'I very much contradict their comment that house music is dead.'

"I know that now they're trying to cross to the pop world, granted that's good, but if you stay in touch with the underground, I think you'll realise there are still people who care about the music," said Sneak.
