Album of the Week : Fixmer/ McCarthy: 'Between The Devil . . .

Author: Jonty Skrufff

Though Fixmer/ McCarthy isn¹t exactly the catchiest of band names, its
simplicity and directness reflects both the music on 'Between The Devil and
the pedigrees of the two individuals concerned. Because while Terence Fixmer
is widely recognised as one of the leading lights in Europe¹s electro/ EBM
(Electronic Body Music) revival, production partner Douglas McCarthy remains
best known as the front man for one of the key bands that started it all;
Nitzer Ebb.

The duo met two years ago after Fixmer was asked to remix Nitzer Ebb at a
point with McCarthy had effectively retired from frontline music to pursue a
career as a advertising director. Making friends, they rapidly agreed to
collaborate, Fixmer handling the music and McCarthy the vocals, and two
years down the line Between The Devil is the first proper fruit.

Raw, energetic, powerful and pounding, the project bears distinct
similarities to NE in their 90s period (the band split in 1995) though
chatting to Skrufff this week, Fixmer insisted they¹re not NE Mark 2 (though
he admits they play several NE tunes when on stage.) While rhey¹re not
Nitzer Ebb, they¹re certainly two individuals who compliment and bring out
the best in each other, tapping into a musical alchemy that makes Between
the Devil both original yet strangely familiar.
