After many years as the front lining, stage diving lead singer of several Canadian punk bands, Tyler "T-Bone" Stadius became one of the first DJ's to introduce house music to Vancouver, with his first residency at 'Romper Room' introducing many to the soulful sounds of Todd Terry, Kerri Chandler and Masters at Work.

As a DJ, Tyler has earned himself many a spot playing at the worlds best clubs (The Shelter & Red Dog in Chicago, DIY / Bounce, Back to Basics, The Rex in Paris, Space at Bar Rhumba, Tribal Function, Radius), including a residency at the highly regarded Fabric.

"It's been an unbelievable year - I have been playing amazing gigs in Argentina & Brazil to Croatia & Slovenia to Germany & Spain, England to Turkey, Bali to Korea, across the US and home again."

Bought up on soul and disco as a youngster, Tyler has had great success with his first two mixed cd's 'Necessary Pieces' and 'Necessary Pieces 2'. Both albums took to exploing the deeper techier side of house, with the addition of many unexpected elements earning him praise from fans and critics alike.

Tyler, who once lived in Afghanistan with dreads past his ass has always played what he likes first and if others take to it, then all the better for it.

"I think I get a bit of my "I don't care" attitude from my early punk band days. I mean I do care, but, I play music for myself first and it seems to be working. I figure that you can't please everyone, so why kill yourself trying."

This leads me to ask Tyler how he gauges his success as an artist, to which he replies,

"I don't really. I feel fortunate to be able to travel and make a living playing the music I'm passionate about."

In 1994 Tyler opened 'Bassix', Vancouver's leading record store which is still going strong today, a success Tyler atributes to that ever lasting quest for fresh wax.

"The sickness really helps - Vinyl Junkie Syndrome - the ever lasting quest for new music..."

Tyler recently found his way into the studio but for now it's more about having fun with his friends, than anything too serious.

"I don't take it too seriously. It's fun to be hanging out in the studio and arguing with friends… I'm currently working on a tight twisted breaks track, a rump shaking bassy thumper and an electroish bleepy thing."

With Tyler soon making his away across to Australia for his debut appearance he gives me some advice on what we can expect when he hits the decks.

"Expect the unexpected."
