The Super Sharp Shooter DJ Zinc

Author: Michelle Pirovich

DJ Zinc is renowned for his high octane rollercoaster sets; tight and sharply mixed, he remains completely calm as he creates absolute bedlam amongst the punters.

As a producer his 1995 jump up anthem 'Super Sharp Shooter' placed him on the map. Combining hardcore rave, ragga and hip-hop styled hardstep DJ Zinc oozes the funk and has produced what is arguably the world's heaviest bassline with 'Freenote VIP'.

His work has appeared on 'Back 2 Basics', 'Congo Natty', 'Droppin' Science', '2000AD', and 'Ganja'. He has collaborated with DJ Hype, Pascal and Ms Dynamite.

TranZfusion fired DJ Zinc a few questions upon his arrival in Melbourne for NYE.

How has the year 2003 been for you, any standout moments-
It's been a wicked year, loads of really good parties and other stuff happenin'. I guess playing at Glastonbury was a high point, as was being nominated for 'Best DJ' and coming in the top 3 for the knowledge and accelerated culture awards, that was really cool, and unexpected.

Where is your sound at right now-
On the dance floor I guess, that's where I get most of my ideas for tunes.

What are you currently up to in the studio-
Doing a few things, a couple of remixes of tracks from my faster album and some new dnb and breaks stuff.

Your current weapon of choice in the studio-
If I told you I'd have to kill you. Simple as that... I reckon my g5 is probably the baby at the moment.

Apart from what others expect of you, how do you gauge your success as an artist-
I suppose by how many records you sell, although that can be misleading.

What keeps you motivated-
I love what I do, DJing is like getting paid to do my favourite hobby and people are there getting into it - sometimes I can't believe its actually happening. Working in the studio is like a drug for me, when I get into that zone and look at my watch and its 5 hours later. I love it.

What will punters experience when you hit the stage in Melbourne NYE-
I'd like to think that I will play a mixture of the best dnb covering all styles within the genre, and hopefully mix ok.

Tell me something we wouldn't know about DJ Zinc.
hmmm. I haven't got a TV in my flat, so except for occasionally when I go to a friends house and they're watchin TV or I'm in a hotel. I ain't really watched TV for about 3 years... for all I know there could be a monkey in charge of the USA.
