Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has launched a new anti-drug initiative to eradicate all drugs from his country, by "matching cruelty with cruelty', the Singapore Times reported this week.

'Drug traders are unkind towards our children so we will be unkind towards them,' the Times quoted him as saying.

'I want to see every square inch getting X-rayed and authorities making a clean sweep of drugs in every area within three months from now."

The Prime Ministry caused international controversy last year when he announced plans to introduce rogue methamphetamine pills into the country's drug markets to deter local users, a plan he subsequently back tracked on.

The new campaign looks certain to be implemented and is scheduled to begin at 9am on February 1.

Neighbouring country Malaysia also announced this week that they'll be stepping up their anti-narcotics campaigns with the launch of the 'Year of Total War Against Drugs'.

Under the scheme, authorities will be organising projects that "enhance discipline and morality of the public" as well as "conducting a blitz against the menace in the electronic media", the Singapore Straits Times revealed.
