New research suggesting hamburgers are as addictive as heroin and cocaine, prompted the London Sunday Times to launch a vicious assault on Americans this week, mocking 'now it seems the fatties have an excuse'.

"Visitors to the United States, expecting the finely honed bodies of the Hollywood image, are more usually confronted with a monstrous army of fatties," a Times editorial scoffed.

"American airlines, tired of trying to squeeze enormous bottoms into ordinary seats, have taken to charging obese customers for two seats."

Standard columnist AN Wilson also used the burgers-as-addictive-as cocaine-story to pillory US culture, saying 'it is no mystery why most Americans do not bother to own a passport. It is because they are too fat to get on a plane'.
