Leading Spanish newspaper El Mundo questioned the manliness of Real Madrid's new signing David Beckham this week, suggesting he represents a 'queerness', common to British blokes.

"There is a feminine touch, a nod to this ambiguity (including sexual)," the paper scoffed (as translated by the (UK) Daily Telegraph).

"In the tradition of the gentleman, so phlegmatically British …[he is] perverse and charming."

The newspaper was apparently reacting to new pictures of the gender bending former Man United player wearing black nail varnish and a studded leather wristband.

"It doesn't of course, mean he's gay," El Mundo added. "But…."
