Men who masturbate once a day reduce their risk of developing prostate cancer by a third, according to a new study published by Australian scientists.

"It's a prostatic stagnation hypothesis," study author Dr Graham Giles, of the Cancer Council Victoria in Melbourne, told New Scientist magazine.

"The more you flush the ducts out, the less there is to hang around and damage the cells that line them."

Prostrate cancer kills over 10,000 British men each year (second only to lung cancer) so the report could have dramatic implications for onanism's status.

"Masturbation is part of people's sexual repertoire," said Dr Anthony Smith from the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society

"If these findings hold up, then it's perfectly reasonable that men should be encouraged to masturbate."

The findings could also have profound implications for evangelical Christians, most of whom still regard wanking as a sin.

"There is nothing in the Bible which gives approbation to celibate sex, sex is to be enjoyed in the boundaries of marriage alone and the Bible gives no other way to have it" writes Dr Ken Mazzo on Scionofzion.com.

"Masturbation is nothing more or less than mental fornication. We may believe we are having sex without consequences but any time we break one of God's laws, whether spiritual or natural, trouble is at the door."
