Police dressed in Robocop style riot gear prevented an English businessman from throwing a private party to celebrate his 40th birthday last weekend, after interpreting an internet message as an advert for a rave.

According to a report on BBC online Mr Rob Angell from Castle Gary, Somerset, had booked a private barn to celebrate his birthday with a small gathering of friends and was interrupted as he made preparations for the party on Saturday afternoon.

"They had seen an advert for the party and were expecting around 3,000 people to turn up. They served us with a notice and said they had to stay there until we packed up all the stuff and left."

Mr Angell told the BBC he'd sent an email to 30 friends with an internet link for directions and pointed out he'd only had space and food and drink for his expected 50 guests. After leaving the barn, he was also pulled over by a police van and cautioned with 'conspiracy to cause a conspiracy to cause a public nuisance'.

"What didn't help was the police followed eight of us back to my house and sat outside for at least two hours in riot gear which was a bit provocative," he added.

Reports on the net claim police also seized Mr Angell's sound system.
