Women who fancy their dinner date eat very little, according to a report in this week's Independent. The revelation appeared in an article examining the importance of ambience in restaurants which suggested that eating in company can increase the appreciation of a meal by 44%.

However, American women might just be stuffed from eating too much on an earlier date, according to Dr Pam Spurr, author of The Dating Survival Guide.

"Americans tend to date more than one person at a time," Dr Spurr told the Observer.

"That does not mean they are sleeping with more than one person at a time, it's a case of keeping their options open."
