Civil liberties campaigners from the Drug Policy Alliance described California's new governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as 'the first major party candidate of a large US state to make no qualms about past marijuana use' this week, referring to an interview he gave to the LA Times in the 70s.

"We smoked pot once or twice a week before we went to the gym," The Terminator admitted.

"Sometimes at parties, someone would pass a joint around. It never interfered because it was so casual."

Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien echoed Schwarzenegger's spliff friendly attitude, telling the Winnipeg Free Press he's considering taking up smoking as soon he retires from Canada's Government.

"Perhaps I will try it when it will no longer be criminal," said the PM.

"I will have my money for my fine and a joint in the other hand."

Far right US drug Tsar John Walters, meanwhile attacked Canadian moves towards decriminalisation complaining "it is the one place in the hemisphere where things are going the wrong way." (Reuters). Speaking at a drugs summit in New England, the puritanical drug warrior also called for random drug testing throughout America's school system.

"This is a silver bullet," he claimed.

"I know this is a tool that will make a difference" (Boston Herald).
