An unnamed Mayor from a town in the Philippines sparked controversy this week after urging authorities to add poison to all shabu (crystal meth) seized by the police. According to a report in local newspaper the Sun Star the mayor suggested such a move would reduce police corruption as well as terrorising drug users into giving up altogether.

"If the poisoned shabu finds its way into the market, the one using it may die and this could generate a story in the media," the Mayor told the Star.

"People would be afraid to die (so) when nobody uses shabu anymore, there will be glut of the illegal drug in the market and the price will plunge. So those engaged in the trade would no longer find it profitable and the trade will die."

The Mayor conceded, however, that his visionary plan was not without problems, specifically his still unresolved question of what poison to add to the drug.

"Cyanide is out of the question because when that poisons touches the foil used in inhaling shabu, it explodes," The Sun Star pointed out.
