Pete Tong's Biggest Misconception

Superstar DJ Pete Tong remains surprised that people question his commitment to dance music and even whether he can properly mix, he revealed this week in an interview about his new TrusttheDJ backed CD The Essential Selection.

Even Lynn Cosgrave (Trustthedj's chief), who knows me well enough to say anything to me without us falling out, said to me recently 'the mix is really good, a revelation- and you mixed it yourself," Pete told Skrufff's Jonty Adderley.

'I went, 'You cheeky cow, I mix all my own records!' and she said 'No you don't'. I said 'I f*cking do. This one's just free of more restrictions'."

The CD in question is the first Essential Selection since Pete parted company with Warner/ AOL and marks a radical new approach for the house music pioneer.

"The Trustthedj thing is all about taking the Essential Selection brand forwards," he explained.

"If we sell 10,000 copies it will feel like it's been a really good thing to do. It's not going to make huge amounts of money but the important point is that I'm releasing something that's untarnished. For the immediate future of the scene, things like that are really f*cking important."

Chatting in London's Soho House, as he prepared for this year's Miami Winter Conference, the Radio 1 tastemaker sounded optimistic about clubland's future, despite the current problems afflicting the scene.

"The music business is collapsing pretty rapidly and yet if I go to a club or bar, check out who's listening to the radio show or talk to anybody, everyone is still going out," he pointed out.

"The best clubs have been better than they've been for years, albeit they might be smaller than they used to be, but in general, all around the world, people still love dance music.

Everybody still loves music and partying, dance music's not dead, it's just moved to a different place," he added.

Pete Tong's Trustthedj.com compilation is out now exclusively via trustthedj.com.
