NME chief Connor McNicolas declared himself the saviour of contemporary rock & roll this week, telling the Guardian, 'all the bands that are knocking about that are exciting now- The Strokes, The White Stripes, Interpol, Polyphonic Spree, Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs- we wrote about all of them first."

The former Muzik editor's boasts coincided with a Music Week marketing survey, however, which suggested McNicolas' favourites are not quite as cutting edge as he seems to believe.

"For many 25- to 35-year old males, the latest album by The Strokes or Starsailor in 2002 or Coldplay in 2001 represented a badge of credibility," said Music Week.

"The sign that they were still in touch with the 'street'."
