Madonna's decision to withdraw her war themed video to American Life at the 11th hour has prompted accusations that the material girl only created it in the first place, to help market her new single.

"Madonna now stands accused of selling records on the back of the conflict and weaselling out of making a statement when the going got tough," said the NME.

One of her fiercest critics was the Guardian's Zoe Williams, who slated Madonna's adoption of a Che Guevara style image for the record's promotion.

"There are very few things more insulting than the appropriation of leftist slogans by people who are trying to sell things," she said.

"It is not for this mediocre singer to tell anyone where we've got to in political evolution. It is not for her to appropriate the face of a social reformer; your average spotty teenager has more right to it than she does."
