Women reporting less lifetime sex partners than men in sex surveys are almost certainly lying, according a new report on contemporary sex lives carried out by researchers at the Ohio State University.

"Women are so sensitive about being labelled 'whores' that they are very reluctant to be honest about their sexual behaviour," head researcher Terri Fisher told the Journal of Sex Research.

"Even in anonymous surveys." (Standard)

Guardian columnist Rod Liddle agreed, suggesting women prefer to appear 'respectable' and 'a bit choosy' though also suggested a gender divide on counting.

"Women may discount, much as did Bill Clinton, anything which does not involve full sexual intercourse, on a regular basis," he said in an earlier Guardian feature.

"Whereas men will undoubtedly add to their total every single incident of fumbling and ferreting around."

The average Brit girl now claims to have had nine lifetime lovers compared to the average man's tally of 13.
