Organisers of this year's J Day, Legalise Cannabis Festival, in Brixton's Brockwell Park have resolved licensing issues with the area's local council and will be staging the event as planned on Saturday May 3. Councillors wanted to impose an 800% increase in the Festival's licensing fee on the grounds that it was a commercial operation, which would have effectively banned the free event altogether. The Legalise Cannabis Alliance reported this week that they've now accepted the massively popular day time party is a community event.

This year's festival should be the last before national authorities relax cannabis laws, though last year's event organiser Hugo Farmer told Skrufff they need to go much further.

"We want cannabis to be readily available for people who want it, from coffee shops like it is in Amsterdam," he said.

"At the moment, you still need to know a supplier to get it, and even though that's not hard, it still needs to be more readily available."

"Cannabis is still frowned on my many people, so we want the educate them with regards to the pros and of course, some of the cons. Of course there are some negatives for some people from smoking marijuana in the same way as some people experience negative effects from alcohol," he added.
